The iconic American sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live is heading across the Atlantic, with a UK version set to debut on Sky Max and the streaming platform NOW in 2026.
Known for launching the careers of comedy legends such as Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, and Will Ferrell, the show has become a cornerstone of American pop culture since its debut in 1975. Now, British comedians will have their chance to shine in an all-new locally produced spin-off.
The UK edition of Saturday Night Live will be produced with the guidance of SNL creator and long-time producer Lorne Michaels, along with his production company Broadway Video, which is behind other popular American shows like The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and 30 Rock. The British production will be co-led by Universal Television Alternative Studio and Sky Studios.
The British version will follow the familiar live format that made SNL famous, with weekly episodes featuring celebrity guest hosts, musical performances, and a cast of homegrown comedic talent. Casting and host announcements will be made in the coming months.
Cécile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios and Sky’s chief content officer, expressed her excitement about the project: “For over 50 years, Saturday Night Live has held a unique place in television and global culture, sparking conversations and discovering remarkable comedy and musical talent. We’re thrilled to work with Lorne Michaels and his team to bring this iconic format to the UK — live from London on Saturday nights.”
This won’t be the first time SNL has tried to expand its footprint internationally. Previous versions, including Le Saturday Night Live in France, were short-lived. However, with a dedicated UK creative team and a strong partnership with Broadway Video, hopes are high for this latest adaptation.
The announcement comes on the heels of SNL’s 50th anniversary, which was celebrated in February. The show’s legacy was recently highlighted in the 2024 film Saturday Night, featuring Willem Dafoe and Nicholas Braun, which explored the origins of the late-night institution.
As fans anticipate the UK launch, all eyes will be on who joins the cast and how the British version puts its own twist on the beloved American format.
