Russian forces launched a new wave of coordinated aerial attacks across Ukraine overnight, targeting multiple cities just weeks ahead of a peace deadline imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The escalation, which included hundreds of drones and missiles, injured at least 15 people and caused widespread damage to civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia deployed over 400 Iranian-made Shahed drones and decoy UAVs, along with a ballistic missile, during the night of July 16. Strikes hit key regions including Kharkiv in the northeast, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih, Vinnytsia in the west, and the southern port city of Odesa.
“Russia hasn’t changed its tactics,” Zelenskyy said in response to the assault. “To properly counter this terror, we must strengthen our defenses — more air defense systems, more interceptors, and stronger resolve to make Russia feel the consequences.”
Civilian Infrastructure Damaged
In Vinnytsia, early-morning drone strikes damaged residential buildings and public infrastructure. Although Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted 18 drones, at least two made impact. One of the strikes hit a civilian site, injuring eight people. Five of the victims suffered serious burns, with two currently in critical condition. One individual underwent emergency surgery after sustaining burns over half of their body.
Several homes in the village of Pysarivka were also affected, with roofs destroyed, walls collapsed, and power and gas lines disrupted.
Zaporizhzhia and Kramatorsk Also Targeted
The southern city of Zaporizhzhia endured another intense round of drone strikes, with at least 30 apartments damaged in one district. Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed there were no fatalities, though several civilians were slightly injured during evacuation efforts.
On Tuesday alone, over 400 separate strikes were reported across 14 settlements in the Zaporizhzhia region, impacting homes, energy facilities, and public services.
In Kramatorsk, explosions were reported around 1 a.m. One drone hit a multi-story apartment building, sparking a fire that engulfed several units. Firefighters responded swiftly and were able to extinguish the blaze, according to local official Oleksandr Honcharenko.
U.S. Deadline Looms
These renewed attacks come as President Trump’s 50-day ultimatum to the Kremlin nears. The U.S. has given Russia until September 2 to negotiate a peace agreement with Ukraine or face a new round of severe economic penalties. Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Russian exports and energy-related secondary sanctions on any nation continuing to purchase Russian oil or gas.
The conflict, now in its fourth year, has increasingly shifted toward air assaults targeting civilian populations and infrastructure, drawing widespread international condemnation.
With no sign of de-escalation from Moscow and peace talks stalled, the situation on the ground remains volatile as both Ukraine and its Western allies brace for what could be a critical turning point in the conflict.
