Xiaomi has issued a statement addressing a recent traffic accident involving its SU7 Standard Edition electric vehicle, which occurred on April 5 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province. The company confirmed that the incident took place on Provincial Highway 376 in Qujie Town, Xuwen County, where the SU7—driven manually by a non-owner—collided with an electric scooter. The driver fled the scene following the crash but was later taken into custody by authorities.
In a message shared via its official Sina Weibo account, Xiaomi expressed its sorrow over the fatalities resulting from the crash. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life in this incident,” the statement read.
According to preliminary findings, the fire that consumed the vehicle was triggered when the electric scooter’s lithium battery was crushed in the collision. The battery reportedly caught fire and the flames subsequently spread to the SU7. Xiaomi noted that while on-site investigations have concluded, the final results will be made available in the official report issued by the appropriate authorities.
A police update from the Xuwen County Public Security Bureau confirmed that the crash occurred around 5:00 a.m. when a 25-year-old man, identified only by the surname Chen, struck an oncoming electric two-wheeler. The impact killed both riders on the scooter. The SU7 then caught fire and was destroyed in the blaze.
Chen reportedly fled immediately after the collision but later turned himself in. He has been arrested and is being investigated on charges related to causing a fatal traffic accident.
This incident comes shortly after another deadly crash involving a Xiaomi SU7 on March 29, which took place on the Dezhou-Shangrao Expressway. That accident, which reportedly claimed three lives, raised concerns over the vehicle’s safety features. According to local media outlet nfnews.com, relatives of the victims alleged that locked doors and a subsequent battery fire contributed to the fatalities.
In response to the March crash, Xiaomi addressed public concerns by posting answers to six key questions on its official Weibo page. CEO Lei Jun also shared his condolences and emphasized that the company is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
As both incidents continue to be examined, Xiaomi reaffirmed its commitment to safety and transparency in working with law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
