Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been hospitalized after experiencing severe abdominal pain, interrupting a political tour in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte. Despite the health scare, doctors have reported that the 70-year-old politician is in stable condition and not currently in need of emergency surgery.
Bolsonaro, who remains a polarizing figure in Brazilian politics, shared updates on social media over the weekend, describing the episode as unusually painful, even compared to previous incidents. “I’ve endured similar pain before, but this time it caught everyone off guard, including the doctors,” he wrote. He also indicated that additional surgery might be necessary.
The former president has faced recurring complications since surviving a life-threatening knife attack in 2018, just weeks before he won the presidential election. Since then, he has undergone multiple operations, including treatment involving a colostomy bag, which has left him vulnerable to intestinal issues.
Bolsonaro was scheduled to begin a campaign-style tour in Rio Grande do Norte aimed at rebuilding support, as he eyes a return to political life. However, his ambitions face significant legal hurdles. Last year, Brazil’s electoral court barred him from running for public office until 2030, following a ruling that found him guilty of undermining trust in the country’s electronic voting system during his presidency.
Further complicating his comeback aspirations, Brazil’s Supreme Court recently ordered Bolsonaro to stand trial on charges related to an alleged plot to overturn the results of the 2022 presidential election, which he lost to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. If found guilty, Bolsonaro could face decades in prison and a permanent ban from politics.
Often referred to as the “Trump of the Tropics” for his combative political style and admiration for former U.S. President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro has been a central figure in numerous investigations since leaving office. Despite mounting legal troubles, he continues to maintain a strong base of supporters and has not ruled out seeking a return to office in the 2026 elections.
As Bolsonaro remains under medical supervision, it is unclear how his health condition will impact his political future. For now, the former leader is focused on recovery, while the political and legal storm surrounding him continues to intensify.
