The United States has officially informed Nigeria of its decision to shorten the duration of visas granted to Nigerian nationals. This change comes amid concerns about visa overstays and the need for improved access to applicants’ records.
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, U.S. authorities cited two main reasons for the policy shift: a high rate of overstayed visas by Nigerian citizens and challenges in accessing reliable documentation from Nigerian authorities. These reasons were communicated directly to the Nigerian government, Onanuga said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The adjustment, part of a broader global visa review initiative by the U.S. known as the “visa reciprocity process,” affects both the length and type of visa granted. Nigerian applicants will now receive single-entry visas valid for three months, replacing the previously available five-year multiple-entry visa.
While the U.S. initially framed the decision as one based on reciprocity, Onanuga’s remarks suggest that underlying security and compliance issues are the primary drivers behind the move.
In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed federal agencies to strengthen identity verification measures and ensure full compliance with Nigeria’s international commitments. He also called on Nigerians living abroad to respect the immigration laws of their host nations and safeguard the privileges extended to them.
Despite the U.S. decision, the Nigerian government has stated it will continue to issue five-year multiple-entry visas to American citizens.
UAE Visa Status Also Under Review
On the matter of transit visa access for Nigerian travelers to the United Arab Emirates, Onanuga clarified that Nigeria has yet to receive any formal notice from Emirati authorities about changes to their visa policy. Nonetheless, he noted that the current visa processing is proceeding gradually and without disruption.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation for the UAE’s continued diplomatic engagement and reaffirmed that any emerging issues are being handled through proper diplomatic channels in a spirit of cooperation.
He emphasized that his administration remains committed to securing favorable outcomes for Nigerians abroad. This includes upholding the right of citizens to travel, work, and live with dignity in accordance with the government’s foreign policy objectives.
