Following the U.S. government’s confirmation that many Chinese exports are now subject to cumulative tariffs reaching as high as 145 percent, China’s Foreign Ministry has reiterated its opposition to trade conflicts while affirming its readiness to respond if necessary.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that China remains firm in its stance. “Trade and tariff wars benefit no one. China has no desire to engage in them, but we are not afraid to respond if provoked,” Lin said.
He criticized Washington’s approach, stating that if the U.S. is serious about resolving disputes, it must abandon its strategy of maximum pressure and erratic behavior. “These methods have no effect on China. Any meaningful dialogue must be grounded in equality, mutual respect, and reciprocity,” he said. Lin also warned that if the U.S. insists on continuing along the path of economic confrontation, China will respond accordingly and consistently.
Describing China as a responsible international actor, Lin added that any retaliatory measures are not only intended to protect China’s own interests but also uphold international norms. “Our response to U.S. coercion is about defending our rights, but also about maintaining global fairness, order, and the interests of the broader international community,” he concluded.
